CHAPARRAL CHOIR NEWS

January / February

Congratulations to Alina Azar, Katrina Chin, Samantha Zell, Tyler Rae, Michael Reust, Camryn Price, Ellie Sachs, and alternates Allison Rugen, Brandon Shuckhart, and Brantley Carden for successfully making the West Region Choir! Only two students from Chaparral qualified last year, compared to 10 who qualified this year! Those that participate in the West Region Choir may now audition for All-State Choir! Way to go, Chaparral Singers! The West Region Festival is Feb.17-18, Central High School.

Advanced Vocal Ensemble & Gold Dust Ave singers will be traveling to Flagstaff Feb. 10 - 11 to participate in NAU's Jazz and Madrigal Festival. Over 90 schools across Arizona, southern Utah and eastern California will be participating and competing. Chaparral will be performing both Jazz (GDA singers) and Madrigal (AVE) for honors. We are excited to include band members, Marcus Mireau (bass guitar), Alex Best (drums) and Slava Li (lead guitar) who will be performing with GDA. It's a fantastic collaboration between band and choir! Trip packets and permission forms have been sent home to parents. An updated itinerary will be going home with singers Monday. Thank you, CHAPTS donors! Your membership donations supported this trip!

Gold Dust Ave singers have qualified for quarter finals in the International Choral High School A Cappella Vocal Competition. Several qualifications include the music performed must be student-arranged (way to go, Katrina Chin!), performed with no tracks or back up music and choreography. We are traveling to San Antonio, Texas Feb. 24 - 26 for their quarter final round of competition. Wish us good luck!

New York Music Tour meeting for travelers and parents will be MONDAY MARCH 6 at 6:00 p.m. in J-600. Please put that in your calendar to attend if you have a student traveling on the NY tour. You will meet the chaperones and the tour representative, Margie Wolf. She will be presenting information and fielding questions.

Chaparral Choirs are doing even more!

SINGERS NEED CHOIR! I attended the annual Az Music Educators Association Conference recently. I was reminded how relevant and important vocal music is for high school age students. Studies show being a part of a great choir family & program is essential to their successes in high school. Not only do students thrive as a group singer, they continue growing, expanding and developing their skills as a vocalist. Just like progress gained learning an instrument, same is true of the vocal instrument. It is an important investment of time, energy and finances into our young singers. In addition, students who commit to choir each year in high school meet a rigorous qualification to earn the coveted Arizona State Arts Proficiency Seal. Current freshman and sophomores who are in choir are on their way to qualify!

Choir is one of the very best ways to enjoy travel, perform, and make life-long friends. Please make sure your son or daughter have signed up for Advanced Varsity Choir or Varsity Choir for the 2023-24 school-year!
